The China Exchange program was established in 2012 and we welcomed the first Chinese students to District 20 in the winter of 2013. More than 25 D20 families hosted the visiting students and their faculty chaperones. In October 2014 the first D20 students traveled to China where the students and faculty visited three different schools and stayed in the homes of Chinese students. The American and Chinese students shared academic classes, arts classes, and even some meal preparations together. The entire group traveled to Shanghai, and Beijing seeing many important historical sites. In 2014 the second D20 student group traveled to Shanghai, Xian, Nantong and Beijing.
In the winter of 2018 D20 will welcome another group of students from Nantong High School. Plans are underway for a third trip to China in the fall of 2018. No trip to China is complete without a hike on the Great Wall or a walk through crowed marketplaces, tasting new foods along the way.
The purpose for establishing the exchange program was to open opportunity for D20 students to grow in the area of global citizenry. Understanding comes through shared experience. The Enrichment Office is very grateful for the continued support the Academy Foundation has provided in the form of student scholarships for the China Exchange.
